Keep the Kitchen Clean—the Easy Way!

love it!

Young mother and her son loading a dishwasher in the kitchen

It’s been said that keeping the house clean with children around is like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos. Basically every mom trying to maintain a clean house totally gets this. However, with a few tips and techniques, most parents can keep troublesome areas such as the kitchen in order and ready for action at a moment’s notice.

If you’ve got five free minutes in your day (we know that doesn’t come often,) here are a few ways for you to keep the kitchen clean and orderly.

“Hired help.”

You know those little people running around the house that contribute to the mess? Have them contribute to cleaning! Make your kids part of the cleaning routine, even if they have limited skills. Pitching in with cleaning builds character and responsibility, something every child should learn.

Focus on touchable surfaces

Germs spread through touch, so handles and drawers are hot spots for spreading illnesses throughout the house. A quick spray of disinfectant can quickly target these areas.
Clean while you cook. This may sound like a conflicting issue, but if you’re just standing in the kitchen while boiling pasta and food is in the oven, you can take that time to unload the dishwasher, wipe down the inside of the microwave, or hand wash a few items. “If you have time to lean, you have time to clean!” Make the most of every minute you’re spending in the kitchen.

Pay attention to countertop items

One way to make a kitchen look messy and cluttered is by keeping items on the countertops at all times. By finding a new home for the toaster, bread, and utensils, the countertops are much cleaner and more pleasing to the eye. Plus, a swipe of kitchen cleaner on the counter keeps it clean without having to work around appliances that are only used on occasion.

Leave a sink of soapy water

One of the most troublesome areas of the kitchen for most families is the sink. Before preparing dinner, load up one side of the sink with soapy water. Drop in utensils and pans into the water while cooking. Teach the children to clean their plates and put them in the soapy water, so that it is faster and easier to load the dishwasher immediately after dinner.

With a few creative techniques, most parents can reduce the time spent cleaning the kitchen and enjoy more one-on-one time with their children immediately after mealtime. Consider employing some of the techniques above in your home to see if you can free up time while keeping the heart of the home clean and orderly.
